Stop Republicans, an accountability campaign of Progressive Turnout Project, is a grassroots-funded effort dedicated to resisting the Republican Party and Donald Trump’s radical right-wing agenda.

The Challenge

Republicans currently hold governorships in 33 of our 50 states, including seven states (see map) that have Democratic majorities in the State Senates and Houses and in which Hillary Clinton won in 2016.

In these states, the Democratic legislatures have passed legislation to move forward on key Progressive issues like Healthcare, Voting Rights, Women’s Rights, LGBT Rights, and Wages and Benefits for Working Class People. Unfortunately, the GOP governors of these states have vehemently blocked movement on these issues every step of the way, putting Trump’s rhetoric into action. Enough is enough. We must hold them accountable and vote them out in 2018.

Corporations and billionaires furthering the Republican agenda have already begun to heavily invest in Republican gubernatorial campaigns. Their motivation is clear; they want to protect their business interests and personal pocketbooks. These millions in contributions are drowning out the voices of seniors, working families, and students. Through our grassroots effort, we will raise funds to ensure that our voices are heard.

The Necessity, More than the Opportunity

Democrats MUST win and pick up gubernatorial seats in 2018. After the November 2016 elections, we have seen an unrivaled level of energy and organizing in the countless marches, rallies, protests, calls, and door knocks that have resisted President Trump and his Congressional Republicans. Despite all of that, in state capitols across America, the regressive, oppressive, disenfranchising, and destructive Right-Wing policies that Trump wants to enact on the national level, have been spreading and gaining ground, led in no small part by Republican Governors.

In 26 states, Republicans have total control of the Governor’s office and the legislature. However, there are six states that have Democratic majorities in their State Senates and State Houses yet have Republican Governors. These states are Illinois, Maryland, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Mexico, and Vermont.

The Republican Governors of these states are holding up progress. Collectively, they have failed to advocate to protect the Affordable Care Act, Social Security and Medicare, Voting Rights, LGBTQ Rights, reduce Gun Violence, and advocate for Comprehensive Immigration Reform.

It’s time to punish Republican Governors for their failed and destructive leadership. We can and should continue to play defense on all that goes on in DC, BUT, in order to protect and build on all that President Obama has accomplished for the past eight years, we MUST go on offense!

Together, we can elect a wave of progressive Democratic leaders that will ensure voices of young people, working families, and seniors, among others, are once again heard in State Capitols. That’s where Stop Republican Governors has a critical role to play.
